Where did I put those darn lost keys?
Losing your keys can be a real bummer, fortunately, we are here to help. There are lots of different types of locks found in a home.
In this article I will cover:
- standard doorknobs
- deadbolts
- cabinet lock
- vehicle keys
Deadbolts & Doorknobs
With a deadbolt or doorknob on a home, the most common way to fit a key would be to disassemble the lock from the door. The lock will need to be picked so the plug of the lock cylinder can be removed. Next, being very careful not to spill the pins in the plug, it will need to be decoded so a new key can be cut.
Another less popular method, requiring more skill and patience, is a technique called impressioning. A skilled locksmith can actually manipulate a key blank in a key cylinder causing it to leave small marks on the key blade telling the locksmith where to file. This method requires a lot of practice and does not always have a great success rate.
Cabinet Locks
If you look closely right near the keyhole on a cabinet lock, there will usually be a code stamped on it. We can look up the code and cut a key from this information. Unfortunately, the code information is not guaranteed accurate, so if this doesn’t work we will have to disassemble the lock and visually decode and cut a key on a code machine or file one out. Cabinet lock keys can also be filed out with the impressioning technique mentioned above.
Automobile Keys
For the record, Integrity Locksmith does not do auto work. If you need car keys don’t hesitate to call- we will refer you to a qualified auto locksmith. Auto locks are typically cut from code or are decoded visually and cut on a code machine. With auto keys, the mechanical part is only half the battle. Virtually all modern vehicles have transponders or chips in the head of the key that needs to be programmed.
