Choose Your Strength
Door closers come in a good variety ranging from economical to expensive. With a door closer you absolutely get what you pay for. An inexpensive closer will be under one hundred dollars and these are meant for rarely used doors…you might be able to get away with this on a light-duty low traffic door. A light-duty commercial closer will run roughly two hundred dollars, however, any closer in this price range would be a mistake on a heavy-duty high traffic door. If you have a heavy-duty, high traffic door you are going to want to spend three to six hundred bucks for something really heavy.
Customization
Door closers are also adjustable. They typically have three settings: 1) back check, this is when opening the door slows before it hits the fully open point, 2) swing speed, this is when closing the full sweep of the door and, 3) latch speed this is when closing the final six inches before latching.
And Finally,
The last thing I will mention about door closers is if you see an indication of leaking oil on the bottom side, it means the closer is shot. When the hydraulic fluid comes out there is no way to put it back in, therefore the closer non-usable.
